Deborah Campbell is an award-winning writer whose work has taken her to Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, Egypt, Colombia, Cuba, Russia, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Her book This Heated Place is a literary journey inside the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Previously an associate editor at Adbusters magazine, she has written for Harper's, The Walrus, The Economist, New Scientist, Utne, the Guardian, Asia Times, Ms., Modern Painters, Canadian Geographic, Canadian Art, The National (Abu Dhabi) and many other publications. Her work has been published in anthologies, essay collections and scholarly journals in Europe, Asia and North America. Her radio documentaries on international affairs have aired on NPR and CBC radio.

Deborah studied history, political science, languages and Near East religions at universities on four continents. An adjunct professor of literary nonfiction at the University of British Columbia, she has guest lectured at numerous universities including Harvard and Berkeley.

Deborah is a member of the FCC literary journalism collective. She won two National Magazine Awards in 2007 for her reportage on Iran and received the  Dave Greber Freelance Writers Award for her Harper’s piece on Iraqi refugees.
